(Theatre Club)

For almost thirty years now, the Madras Players has presented a range of quality productions to Madras audiences. As an amateur theatre group however we have constraints, the main one being raising money to cover production and publicity costs.   Over the years our energies have been diverted to searching for sponsorship, resulting in a lesser number of productions. To overcome this, we launched The Madras Players Theatre Club, where theatre enthusiasts join by paying an annual subscription which allows us to produce plays for them on a regular basis.

The idea is to do exciting and challenging drama, rather than being restricted by commercial viability.  The Theatre Club allows us to cut costs and streamline operations by eliminating publicity and having non-ticketed shows for members.   It was hoped that membership fees would be enough to sustain theatrical activities, but as we go into our fourth year the Theatre Club is still subsidising its productions through sponsorship and the generosity of a few well-wishers.  We hope that this is a transitory phase and that Madras audiences will come forward to support the
idea of self sustaining, quality theatre.

To this end, we urge you to join/renew your membership to The Madras Players Theatre Club.  The annual subscription valid for the calendar year is Rs. 200/- (plus Rs. 100/- registration fee for new members).  The activities of the Club include:

• Production of three plays a year.  These will be non-ticketed shows for members and, on occasion, their guests.

• Rehearsed readings at small theatres and alternative venues.

• Workshops/seminars on dramatic theory and techniques.

• Play readings for small groups.

• Video screenings of plays and related programmes for small groups.

• Co-ordinating groups of those members who want to initiate or participate actively in theatre and related activities.

• Periodic bulletins listing forthcoming Theatre Club events as well as providing information about performances by other groups.

• Co-ordinating discounted block bookings for our members for shows by other groups.

• Subsidised annual subscription dinner for members and their guests.

We look forward to having you at our next show.  May we remind you that ours is a non-profit group - no one in the Madras Players gets paid for doing plays.   We simply enjoy doing fresh and exciting theatre; but every
production involves effort and expense.  We therefore need and appreciate your encouragement and support.
