The Madras Players is an amateur English language theatre group that has been in existence for over 40 years. Not only is it one of the oldest functioning theatre groups in the country, but is also probably the only group, which has staged the maximum number of "Indian" plays in English. While the group has done several works of British, American and European playwrights, we attracted a larger audience after we started doing plays by Indian playwrights. Started with a fund from the British Council, we are proud of the fact that we have now become part of the theatre scene in our city.
The Madras Players Theatre Club was started in 1996, and has been a fairly successful venture. From the proceeds of the annual subscriptions from members we have done several smaller productions (cost not to exceed Rs. 30, 000), poetry readings, readings of English translations of books in the regional languages and theatre workshops.
